where'd it go? you were just right here
coming clean at the rest stop
i'm never where i want to be. i see me
take it out for some air
set it down over there
i can't take no more scares
take me out for some air
watch you sleep in the night
that's how i feel inside
hide away from the light
that's when i feel alright
do you want to be my friend?
i drove here in the death star
i'm everywhere i want to be. i see me

you are walking through the room like a delusion. half in the light.
why do you seem so wasted as you push the assassin out of the window?
there was a change in the way that it felt to you
and you get all caught up in the residue
it's like you're choking in the back of a restaurant
and then the bartender hands you the telephone
and it's down a road in the country
crossing at the county line, a two-lane highway down into the canyon
i think i could go all night throwing these rocks and breaking the windows
there was a change in the way that it felt to you
and now you're climbing up higher for a better view
it's like the river is starting to freeze around you
and you still haven't made it across
you had a lot of ideas about everything
like the cold dark desert you're dying in
it's down a long dirt road that i dreamed about
half in the light of a dying sun
but i know it's all a delusion

every window empty

green grass underneath the sycamore
i was running out of time trying to make it to the last page
part of it was finally feeling hungry
and the other part was living alone with the curtains drawn
i was going for a ride, i was hypnotized
i knew it all along
turning into something i think i recognize
i can hear the howling again
despite the slow thaw of time
driving on the empty highway
got home after midnight
every window empty
save the silver mountain light
across the grounds, over on the south side
where you go to hide and the corners gather up the last light
i was better off and didn't feel so lost
chained to a satelite

take me outside. walk around in the rain. i was in love through a window. never look at the pilot. just drink whatever they set before you. accept the death of your heart. listen to the voices telling you you've got to drag yourself through alone.
the river is flat and still in the gloom. why would i knock on my own door? clouds drift in and out of my skin as i'm hammering holes in the wood floor. somebody died alone in the bath tub. the gutters were exploding with all the blood and the guts again

now we've all got a deep well and a dark shadow
and there's somebody out there in the thick fog
is it hiding or is it hidden?
you are standing in the tall grass in your new skin
with a flashing of your eyes you call out
i can hardly believe it

i go back there all the time. it's dark and i'm afraid, but i can't stay away. through the trap door and into the room underneath the floor. i'm afraid in a strange vague way.
it must've been hard for you, dragging that body through the hall, staying quiet in the dead of the night. i can see it all now underneath a clean white sheet. a narrow box, that's the shape of it's mouth.
they were coming up the stairs. a thousand lizards en masse. backed me into a corner where i could've stood but i laid down and let them pass.
my dead enemy crossing the bridge above the city. every step, every smoldering regret. i was up late following you into a dangerous place. i can't see three feet in front of me.
south dakota nightmare. arizona dream. couldn't pick the lock again, so i'll spend another night in the spaces in between.

talking you out of it
talking a mile a minute
your cigarette in the dark
i can't keep my mind from breaking up on that rocky shore
always another
pair of headlights on
this two lane highway
i can't see the skyline behind your street sign
what's the cost to us?
is it life and death?
would you believe it?
i was just in the neighborhood
driving through the rain
taking the long way
down in your basement
in a folding chair
you stared straight into my eyes

all my friends are gone
and the shadow of the red tower's long
i'm trying to remember a song
but i get it wrong
and drift to sea
all my blood is drained
careful not to let it stain
i wash it away in the rain
unearth a key

bars in the windows. push the fence down. you raise your arm in the pale light. you said you wanted an adventure. we've come to this forbidden place now.
it's overgrown limestone. your dark eyes close slowly. i only want to rest with you.

midnight's daughter

i'm trying to get away from myself
i'm always trying to get away
stay up all night. rearrange.
it's a frightening feeling coming over me
i touched you last, midnight's daughter
the hero killed the clown when the sun went down
(i need to see it in the morning light
cover the windows and it's all for spite
i'll take you anywhere you want to go
thunder and lightning but it's all for show)
